Dear Senators,

On behalf of the National Council of Urban Indian Health (NCUIH) and the 150,000 patients our programs serve annually, we write to beseech you to include S. 1790, the Indian Health Care Improvement Reauthorization and Extension Act of 2009 (IHICA) in the merged health insurance reform bill currently being consider by the Senate.

All Indian people, whether living on the reservations or in urban centers, desperately need this important piece of legislation reauthorized. It has been over ten years since IHCIA was last reauthorized and this is the single best opportunity that we have to get our health bill passed. IHCIA is the foundation for the Indian health care delivery system. In order to ensure that the trust responsibility to Indian people is upheld during this time of national health insurance reform IHCIA must be included in the national health insurance reform bill.
