NCUIH is excited to offer internship and fellowship opportunities to undergraduate, graduate, and law students. This remote opportunity allows students to work part-time throughout the semester, accommodating for class schedules and availability, or full-time during the summer. Internships and Fellowships are available for academic credit, or for compensation, dependent on available funding.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. To apply for either the Public Policy Internship or the Law and Policy Fellowship, please send a cover letter and resume/curriculum vitae to policy@ncuih.org, with the subject line “Policy Internship/Fellowship”. The cover letter should include what interested the applicant about the position and any policy focus or specific skills that they wish to gain.
Law fellows will have both internal and external responsibilities grounded in serving urban Indian organizations (UIOs) to advance the mission of NCUIH through policy, advocacy, outreach, technical assistance, and research projects in the health care and public health fields. Law interns/fellows will report to the Director of Federal Relations and regularly work with NCUIH’s Executive Director and Director of Congressional Relations. In addition, law intern/fellows’ work will include analyses of agency activities and support for engagement with agencies under the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), including the Indian Health Service (IHS), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Health Resources and Services Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Administration for Children & Families, HHS Office of the Inspector General, and more; Department of Justice; Department of Veterans Affairs; Department of Agriculture; and other agencies as relevant to NCUIH’s mission. Regulatory and policy priorities within the last year have included the following areas: the federal trust responsibility, Medicaid, Medicare, third-party reimbursement, behavioral health, domestic violence, opioids and substance use disorders, HIV and Hepatitis-C, Federal Tort Claims Act, Federal Advisory Committee Act, and more.
The National Council of Urban Indian Health is offering a policy internship within the Department of Public Policy which carries out NCUIH’s Congressional and Federal outreach and education efforts. An intern will have the opportunity to learn about the health of urban Indian populations and build skills and knowledge in policy, research, and legislation. The National Council of Urban Indian Health offers summer internship positions within the Technical Assistance and Research Center (TARC). Interns in the DC area or remote will have the opportunity to learn about the health of urban Indian populations and build skills and knowledge in policy, research, evaluation, public health, and health promotion. TARC staff will provide direct supervision and support the intern in building their professional resume for future advanced degrees and employment opportunities.
