Short Abstract:

On February 4, 2008, the President issued his Budget of the United States Government for Fiscal Year 2009. Indian housing programs are lodged in the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Department of the Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), the Department of Veterans Affairs, the United States Department of Agriculture and the Department of Labor. The Presidents Budget Request keeps pace with last years funding levels for many programs; however, as has happened for the last few years, programs such as Interiors BIA Housing Improvement Program (HIP) and NAIHC are zeroed out. The Administration describes HIP as duplicative to HUDs NAHASDA programs. NAIHC is viewed as an earmark in the fiscal reform movement sweeping across Washington DC now.
