Abstract:

Written Statement of Robert Hall, President National Council of Urban Indian Health to the Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health

June 27, 2001

What will make a difference? First, and foremost, Indian people need a stronger voice in the health care debate. Too often our voices are literally drowned out by the cacophony of other health care interests. Elevating the position of Director of Indian Health Service to that of Assistant Secretary for Indian Health will greatly strengthen the voice of Indian country, whether in the halls of the HHS, the corridors of U.S. policymaking Congress, or wherever the health care debate occurs and policy decisions are made. When we hear that the Director of IHS cannot attend certain meetings because of his lesser position, by formality of political protocol, it is time for a change. Protocol should never come at the price of common sense and the health needs of 2 Americans. The elevation of the status of the Director of IHS will go a long way to addressing these very real concerns.
