SDPI should be have a long-term reauthorization of at least $200 million September 30, 2017, so that these programs can continue to eradicate diabetes and communities can access culturally appropriate diabetes care.
The Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) is critical to urban American Indian and Alaska Native communities who experience a higher prevalence of diabetes and a greater diabetes mortality rate than the general U.S. population living in those areas. Since the SDPI program began in 1997, urban Indian Health Programs (UIHPs) have reveal some improvements in key diabetes care outcome for AI/ANs at these urban facilities over a 10 year period, from 2001-2011.
