Abstract:

As Chairman and on behalf of the National Indian Health Board, I write regarding H.R. 1328, a bill to reauthorize the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA). H.R. 1328 has been favorably reported by the Natural Resources Committee and by the Health Subcommittee of the Energy & Commerce Committee. The commitment and dedication shown by these two committees to achieving improvements in the health of American Indians and Alaska Natives is appreciated throughout Indian Country.

Indian Country was concerned to learn that H.R. 1328 might not proceed to mark up by the full Energy & Commerce Committee on March 13, 2008 because of an impasse regarding the Hyde amendment. In response to these concerns, the NIHB passed Resolution 2008-001, formally requesting that H.R. 1328 not be delayed due to the Hyde amendment issues and to take all steps necessary to pass the bill. On behalf of the Board, I ask for your assistance.
