On behalf of the 36 urban Indian health clinics across the United States, the National Council of Urban Indian Health would like to first congratulate you on the good and successful work that the American Legacy Foundation has done in developing culturally sensitive tobacco cessation programs. We would also like to express our strong support for the work that the Legacy Foundation has done and continues to do. We are very interested in the programs you have developed targeting Native American people and commend your efforts to develop cessation initiatives for our community, which is often overlooked.

On behalf of the 36 urban Indian health clinics across the United States, the National Council of Urban Indian Health would like to first congratulate you on the good and successful work that the American Legacy Foundation has done in developing culturally sensitive tobacco cessation programs. We would also like to express our strong support for the work that the Legacy Foundation has done and continues to do. We are very interested in the programs you have developed targeting Native American people and commend your efforts to develop cessation initiatives for our community, which is often overlooked.
As mentioned above, we are particularly interested in Legacy Foundations programs targeting American Indians and Alaska Natives as tobacco related illnesses and deaths has increased an alarming 184% percent between 1973 to 2001 and continues to climb. We are also strongly supportive of the Legacy Foundations effort to increase research on tobacco use among AI/AN communities. We believe that such research is desperately needed as data regarding AI/AN populations is often not collected by mainstream health research centers and organizations. Almost every other race and ethnicity except American Indians and Alaska Natives has seen a decline in the use of tobacco produces since 1980. We believe that culturally specific, targeted efforts like the ones promoted by the Legacy Foundation are not only timely, but desperately needed.
