The Indian Health Service (IHS) has established a long and successful history of addressing acute, infectious diseases. Today, a new epidemiological challenge faces the Indian Health system: Chronic Illness. The IHS has recognized that the future health of American Indian and Alaskan Native  communities depends on how effectively the the Indian Health System addresses chronic conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and various cancers.
